I've noticed that sometimes when I use the Word spell checker that it wants to
replace the word with the same word. What causes that?

It may be that the word you think you have is not what you really have. For
example, if you import text from WordPerfect, a word like "don't" may look
perfectly correct, but because the apostrophe is actually a character from
the WP Typographic Symbols font instead of an apostrophe from the default
paragraph font, Word doesn't recognize the word.

Or it could be that part of the word is formatted as a different language or
as "Do not check spelling" (though a limited test doesn't confirm that this
could be a problem).

Possibly formatting. The next time it happens, I'll post the word and context.
It seems to happen a fair amount, so it shouldn't be long.
