MS-Mouse wheel differences

I've noticed that some Microsoft mouses have a smooth
mouse wheel with barely noticable "clicks" as you turn
it, while the exact same mouse seen at another location,
has very stiff precise "clicks"
I'd compare it to the differences between running your
fingers over a tray full of marbles and a tray full of
golf balls.
I want to buy a new MS-Mouse but want to know how I can
ensure I get the marble touch wheel. Is there any way to
know what I'm getting other than the "wait until it's
unpacked and see" approach?

You don't mention where you plan to make your purchase. Go Brick & Mortar if
you want to try before you buy. My nearby stores, Staples, Office Max,
CompUSA, Best Buy all have their mice out on a display shelf so you can try
them.

That wouldn't help the OP. They are complaining that two mice of the
exact same manufacturer/model have different feel on the wheel.
Playing with the display model won't guarantee the wheel will feel the
same on the boxed mode.

To the OP: this is called "manufacturing tolerance." There will be
diffences on all products coming off the exact same line. My car's
manual shifting of gears feels different than the one that came off
the line before and after it.

The only way to tell if the mouse you are getting has the feel you
want in the wheel is to see if the floor staff will let you open the
box and try it. If the box is sealed they probably won't.

Yeah those ones under the shelf are so different from the ones on top of the
shelf. What could I have been thinking.

Sarcasm aside, that is EXACTLY what the OP was complaining about.
