They are mainly talking in future-tense... so it's possible that they're
looking into it. But seeing as we're all under license to use their
software - they can do whatever the hell they like!

not future tense - they are talking about the windows genuine advantage tool
currently in use on most xp systems. (the lastest version is installed by
windows automatic updates as a "critical" update, so many people don't even
know they have it.)

All we need now is Paul Thurrott to make a statement then we know it's
complete bull!

To the US lawyers proposing to take a sony DRM type class action against MS
for their alledged WGA phone home spyware.

please consider:

Mike said;
"Well, it's an anti-MS rumor on slashdot. I'd say that pretty much
guarantees it's not true.

Mike"

So there !

You don't have a case. :) LOL

PS: Mike, it really is true, but if anyone is worried you can just
uninstallthe MS WGA critical update, or just stop it phoning home, Zone
Alarm Pro 6.5.700, etc will all do that, No Problem, that is until you
want to install more MS software, and the lack of WGA will stop you.

PPS: To the WGA class action folks, MS has just given us all a freebie
OS, Vista Beta2 for a year, so don't go attacking MS, that's not fair,
especially when the EU is trying to kill off poor old MS.

Cheers

Grumpy
