Quite often when I am installing updates for MS XP it states that it
is 'Installing MS Malaware Removal Tool xxxx'

Where can I access this removal tool or does it remove some malware
automatically?

This is not a real tool. It is MS's attempt to make sure that their
update stream is "clean." Do not rely on it.
 
The MSRT removes specific instances of a relatively small collection of
malware. It's intended to offer at least some protection for people too
clueless to have their own anti-malware solution or to know how to use
it. (In other words, not you.)
