A site I really would like to be able to use requires Java VM Microsoft
and refuses Sun Java. All files I found on the Internet which claims to
be full installs of Java MS actually check for a previous installation
of Java VM. I do understand the legal implications of this issue but
until the developper of the site changes its code, I need this MS Java.
The newsletter MS recommended that I get creates the same quandary: no
ms java, no install!

Any help will be appreciated. Thanks

You need to install msjavwu-3809.exe, reboot, then msjavwu-3810.exe.

Thanks, I will follow those instructions and report back to the NG.

Hi Jim,

As promised, here is the situation after two days of fumbling and
struggling to install VM on the 4 machines I maintain. I managed to get
3 of them work after lots of trials and errors, the process not being
apparently as straightforward as running two installers. On the forth
machine (SP3, IE6sp1), nothing seems to work. None of the installers
seem to check for previous installations and when one does, (3810), it
reports that I am trying to overwrite a newer installation with an older
one!

Is there some more structured approach to this problem? How is possible
to remove all traces of MS java to start a clean install ? The approach
suggested does not work here (and I am unable to say which approach
worked for the 3 first machines since each apparead to behave
differently; they are not strictly identical) and I am running out of
ideas ... and may be of patience!! :).

Regards

Well, it worked for me on three or four machines.

There are of course a lot of other settings which could get in the way:
IE Tools/Options.../Security and Advanced, or some overzealous settings
on a firewall/proxy server. You may have to play around with those.

Michael,

It looks like the issue is elsewhere. For lack of a solution (and having
Winmgmt.exe errors after upgrading to SP4 that did not seem to have a
solution), I restored the stubborn machine to a configuration 2K, SP3
but IE5.5; In this configuration, MS Java VM works Ok. I am beginning to
wonder if MS Java got disabled when I upgraded the machine to IE6 with
Windows Update. Do you think this could be the case? Before I try again
and chance risking again precious time on this issue, I would like to
hedge my bets...

I have no idea. The PCs I dealt with were NT5.0-SP4 and NT5.1-SP1,
IE6.0-SP1, and have never seen Windows Update (they get updated through
administrative downloads).
