Hi,

My MS Word 2002 operating on a Win XP platform have previously worked
fine with MS Equation. However, in the last month or so, all the
equations have somehow changed to wingdings.

Can anyone help me out??? Really need to get it fixed. Thanks.

My MS Word 2002 operating on a Win XP platform have previously
worked fine with MS Equation. However, in the last month or so,
all the equations have somehow changed to wingdings.

Need more information here. Is EVERY symbol in the equation(s) a
symbol from Wingdings, or just the symbols that don't appear on
the keyboard (like summation, "less than or equal to", etc.)?
Some of those special symbols come from Symbol font, but most of
them come from a font called MT Extra. It's a good possibility
that something has happened to your MT Extra font -- maybe it's
corrupted or even deleted.

Also, check your font definitions (Equation Editor Style/Define
menu). "Symbol" style should be set to Symbol font.

Hi Bob,

Yes you are right, it's not all converted. The alphanumeric symbols
are all OK but other symbols seemed to be converted into something
else.

I've tried using MS Word's Detect and Repair function but no change.
How do I fix a corrupted or missing MT Extra font?

I've also tried changing the Styles & Formatting to Symbol, but
nothing
changed.

How do I get to Equation Editor Style?

Thanks.

How do I fix a corrupted or missing MT Extra font?

It's on your Office CD, but an easier place to get it is to
download and install the font installer from our home page (link
below). The MT Extra in that package is more extensive than the
one in Office.
I've also tried changing the Styles & Formatting to Symbol,
but nothing changed.

How do I get to Equation Editor Style?

In light of your last question, I'm not sure I understand the
statement immediately prior. When you enter symbols into an
equation, you don't have to switch to Symbol style; Equation
Editor does that automatically. But to answer your question, when
you're in Equation Editor, the menus in the Word menu bar aren't
Word menus any more; they're Equation Editor menus. One of those
menus is Style. In the Style menu, click on Define, and the
Symbol style should be assigned only to Symbol font. If it's
anything else, you should change it to Symbol.

I popped in the Office CD and tried repairing Word and reinstalling
Word, but the problem is still there. I couldn't find a specific way
to just reinstalling the MT Extra font. Any idea.

Sorry, I can't afford the package that is sold by your company... 8(

You don't have to buy MathType to use the font installer.

I recall from an earlier post you're using Word 2002. Pop in your
Office XP CD, and look for the file OFFICE1.CAB in the root
folder of the CD. You don't need anything special to open a CAB
file -- just double-click it. (If the setup program starts when
you insert the CD, just Cancel out of it and leave the CD in the
drive.) Now this is important: before you drag the file
MTEXTRA.TTF over to your C:\Windows\Fonts folder, go to the fonts
folder and delete the old one first. But that's not all! It's
possible to have more than one font with the same name in that
folder. After you delete one of them, the other one won't show up
until you close Windows Explorer (i.e., "My Computer"), and look
at the font list again. If it's gone, fine. If it's still there,
delete it again. Keep repeating this process until there are no
more MTExtra fonts listed in the font folder. THEN you can drag
the new one over there.

You don't have to buy it. It's free for 30 days. After 30 days it
will work indefinitely in a mode called "MathType Lite", which is
similar to Equation Editor. Either way, the fonts are yours to
keep and use forever.

Thanks, I've installed Math Type but the problem still persist. I've
even tried removing the MTExtra font and copying the font from the
Office XP CD, as suggested, with no change.

Could the problem be due to Adobe Acrobat that I've installed? Or
other software?

If you did that AFTER you installed MathType, you'll mess up
MathType. If that's the case, you need to put MathType's version
of MTExtra back.

Let's go back a few steps...

Open up MathType, and tell me what fonts are listed when you go
to Style > Define > Advanced. (I don't care about User1 and User2
styles, just the others.)

Basically what I did was... install MathType... problem exist...
remove font and copy it from Office CD... problem exist... reinstall
MathType... problem still exist.
