Having problems getting network up under MS-DOS 7 - in other words
command prompt only, but all of Windows 98 is installed.

These are the errors that I get:
3660: problem with NWLINK
3659: problem with NetBEUI
7361: IPX or NetBIOS must be running

Q1 - Does installing a service such as NetBIOS or NetBEUI while
running Win98 mean that it will still be installed at command prompt
only mode?

Q2 - What IS NWLINK?

Q3 - Is there a file somewhere that I can inspect uner DOS to see a
list of drivers, services and so on?

Q4 - Once DOS is booted, how can I check which services are running
and whether they are OK?

Q5 - When I try to use NET, I am told: "The WORKSTATION service is
not started." Would it have started automatically if all the services
and drivers were present? If not, how would I have started it?

Windows IPX/SPX-Compatible Protocol Driver

"type config.sys" and/or "type autoexec.bat"

If you could, the command would be: "net start"

That would only tell if they were loaded, not whether running or OK.

Of course. But under DOS a successfully loaded driver tends to be
running :-). Like you indicated, I also know no method to answer Q4 if
taken literally (it would mean to ask each driver found by MEM if it's
okay and feeling well, something most drivers aren't equipped to answer)
:-).

True.

The OP was asking about networking under DOS 7 - the implication was
that he was trying to use WIN 98 networking from DOS 7, which of
course, doesn't work, usually. It it did, "net config" would answer
most of his questions for networking, at least.

If there had ever been any standards for IOCTL usage, then it could
have been possible to have a driver query program. If I ever design
an OS, I will be sure to include such. :-)

Maybe OP has an application that only works with DOS. Or maybe the OP
is a Luddite :)

Heh. Judging by your spelling and grammar skills, son,
you'd better stick with WinDoze.

Mikro$loth designed WinDoze specifically for people who
aren't able to progress beyond the kindergarten stage
of pointing at pictures.

It isn't abandoned by others. There are even several other, non-Microsoft
versions of DOS available. The most popular site at my ISP is one user's
personal site, "Doctor DOS' DOS Site":
http://www.chebucto.ns.ca/~ak621/DOS/index.html

And from where I am sitting, I can directly look at three machines that
can run a version of MS/PC-DOS that can't support Windows (none have hard
drives) and one that can only run a very old version of Windows (for a
'286).

I also have one old machine that runs MP/M-86.

Fair enough, my writing was appalling and I was wrong, but hey, it made good
conversation!!!
