Using XP Home I have Microsoft Automatic updates switched on and so at
intervals I get a flag asking me to install - which I normally do.
However, there is an "update" which annoys me. When I boot up now I get
a box asking me to install an update which will inspect my machine and
tell me if I have any pirate MS software and it will nag me to do
something about it every time I switch on. As far as I know all my MS
software is legal but I object to MS wanting to install this spyware
junk on my computer. I have not installed it and would like to get rid
of it. How do I do this? Any help gratefully received.

Double click the shield and select custom - uncheck the update.
You should be asked if you wish to hide the update.

If that doesn't work -

To hide the update, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, point to All Programs, and then click either Windows Update or Microsoft
Update.
2. Click Custom.
3. Click to clear the check box that is next to the update that you want to hide.
4. Expand the update that you want to hide, and then click the "Don't show this update
again" check box.
5. Click Review and install updates.

Now remove the downloaded update

Stop the Automatic Updates service

Click Start, Choose Run.
In the Run box, type services.msc.
Click OK.
Right-click the Automatic Updates service.
Click Stop.
Stopping the service will take a moment.

Delete the contents of the Download folder
Click Start. Choose Run.
In the Run box, type %windir%\SoftwareDistribution
Click OK.
Open the Download folder.
Delete all contents of the Download folder.
Close the window.

Start the Automatic Updates service
Click Start. Choose Run.
In the Run box, type services.msc.
Click OK.
Right-click the Automatic Updates service.
Click Start.
Starting the service will take a moment.
