I noticed that my system was frquently very sluggish when I started
programs, often exhibiting delays of several seconds when the Start Menu
just sat there and looked at me. Upon investigation, I determined that
gcasDTServ.exe (a component of the beta product) was executing a very large
number of very small I/Os at the time. Further investigation revealed that
the beta release had expired on 31 Dec. The above comment is mainly for the
benefit of other who might have experienced the same problem, as I propose
to install a later version which I hope will sort things out (!). And
finally to the point: do I need to uninstall the previous beta version,
before installing the Update ?

Thanks,

Pete K

This is what I recommend doing:

Using Windows Explorer, navigate to \program files\microsoft
antispyware\gcasSwUpdater.exe--look for a satellite dish icon.

Double click on that executable. This won't do anything obvious--no UI will
appear, but it should trigger an update check which will bring you a popup
from the program that a new version is available. Follow the steps in that
popup to update to a new version with a July 31 expiration date.

Additionally, it appears that beta2, Windows Defender will be released quite
soon--possibly next Tuesday--so there's a more significant update in the
offing you should be aware of.
