When MSAS Beta1 started giving me 101 errors on the non-administrator
accounts I tried an uninstall / reinstall to correct the problem. Nothing
changed.

After installing Defender Beta2, I went to uninstall Beta1. In doing so,
several warnings were raised that some components could not be unregistered
(I'm pretty sure that was the message). By using the Microsoft Install
Cleanup utility, and reinstalling Beta1, I was able to obtain a clean
uninstall.

To check the completeness of the uninstall, I scanned the registry for the
"gcas" character string - and found a TON of entries still referencing the
now uninstalled Beta1 program's location.

How can I SAFELY remove all these dead registry entries that are bloating
the registry?

In advance, thanks!
Jay

Microsoft doesn't, at the moment, provide a registry "cleaner." They used
to, but it was withdrawn, because it caused problems. I've not seen any
objective evidence to prove that registry cleaning makes a measurable
difference in performance. There are, however, a couple of registry
cleaners that others here recommend, so maybe someone else will chime in.

I'm intrigued by your statement that you uninstalled Microsoft antispyware
AFTER installing beta2. The beta2 install does an uninstall of Microsoft
Antispyware. As you've observed, there is a lot left behind, but it
shouldn't remain in add or remove programs as an uninstallable item, nor
should it have been listed for the Windows Installer Cleanup tool to remove,
I believe.

Bill is correct, We remove beta 1 on install of beta 2. Where did you see
beta 1 (control panel, explorer, etc.)? Thanks!
