MS Access under Windows XP will not import from Excel

When I migrated my Office 97 Professional software to a
newer machine with Windows XP, I no longer get the option
of "MS Excel" as a field type. This is when I am in
Tables, New, Import. I have a dynamic spreadsheet of
check issuance that I need to convert to a database for
connection to other data. Please let me know if there is
a service pack or other download that can help me. I
installed the Value Pack without any additional success.
