I have an Access 97 database that uses ole objects from MS
word. Everything worked fine until I updated to Office
2000. When I installed Office 2000, I found out that I
could not use the database without updating it and saving
in in the 2000 format. Since this database is used at work
and they have Office 97, I couldn't make any revisions to
the database without making it unusable to everyone else.
Therefore, I removed Office 2000 and reinstalled Office 97.
(I did not open the database in Access 2000.) Now, when I
use the database and it tries to open the OLE object, I get
an error message that states: Run-time error 2691. Access
can't communicate with the OLE server. The OLE server may
not be registered. To register the OLE server, reinstall
it. The question of the day is, How do I register this?

Hi Rick,

I don't really know the answer to this one and can't find it in the
Microsoft knowledgebase at www.support.microsoft.com

But the OLE server is the "parent application" of the OLE object, so in
this case it's Word. It won't do any harm to re-register Word as
described at http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/AppErrors/ReRegisterWord.htm
.. If that fails, I'd try re-installing Office 97.

If *that* fails - or if you want to cut to the chase - I suspect there
are some bits of Office 2000 hanging round interfering with Office 97.
Knowledgebase articles http://support.microsoft.com/?id=239938 and
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=247674 explain how to get rid of these
(be sure to back up your data and follow the instructions carefully),
after which you'll need to re-install Office 97.

Sometimes I have to completely uninstall Office, reboot, and then install it
again to fix similar problems.

Alex.
