Probably I'm wrong, but for me that sounds as a virus.
Or its aftereffect -- if the virus itself had been deleted by antivirus
program.
If the first -- install an antivirus program with the up to date virus
base.
If the second -- run (Start -- Run...) Regedit, navigate in the left
pane to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.exe (that is Dot-Exe at the end), and see if
the default value in the right pane is not:
exefile
and/or Content Type is not:
application/x-msdownload
as it has to be. Then navigate in the left pane to
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\open\command
and to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\runas, and see if the default
values of these keys are not:
"%1" %*
as it has to be.
