.mpg Import Problems

Please help - I am going insane.....
I am trying to import .mpg files (which were recorded and imported to my PC
from a Sony HDD DCR Handycam....

Everytime I import the files to Movie Maker it produces an error saying
".MPG could not be imported. An interface has too many methods to fire events
from".

I have tried converting the file to .avi and .wmv and this does not help!!

How did you convert the files to .wmv and .avi?
