i have an mpg file that i import into movie maker, but instead of movie maker
recognizing it as a video file, it recognizes it as an audio file, and this
clip does not have sound

Windows MovieMaker isn't really designed to edit MPEG files. Either convert
it to something that WMM likes, or use third party editing software like
WinDVD Creator, PowerDirector, Roxio or Nero.

I had the same problem. What ticks me off is that Movie Maker says it works
with mpeg files. Clearly it does not.

The solution I found was to download a free trial version of ArcSoft
Showbiz. With this, I could drag an MPG video into it, clip it, and then
export my trimmed down clip as either an MPG file or an AVI file (very large).

Actually, by downloading and installing the free trial version of Arcsoft
ShowBiz, it fixed MovieMaker so that it now displays video (instead of only
playing audio). How did this 'magically occur'? It appears that Arcsoft
ShowBiz installed a CODEC into my WinXP computer, and MovieMakers entire
problem was that it was using an older CODEC.

So, now, just by installing ArcSoft Showbiz, I am able to edit MPG videos
with either ArcSoft Showbiz or MovieMaker. A 2-for-1 special. :-)
