mpg file won't play

I just spent 5 hours downloading the latest free movie
players; DivX, Quicktime and WMP9 and none of them can
play a mpg file I downloaded from a newsgroup. Xnews
downloaded it, decoded it and joined it without errors.
The file isn't currupt and doesn't contain a virus. WMP9
searched for codecs for it then gave this message: "Class
factory cannot supply requested class".
How many freakin types of mpg's are there?
While searching for answers I heard mention of a mpeg-2
type movie... Quicktime wants twenty bucks to download
that software. I'm not sure Xnews is tranfering files to
disk in a recognizable format cause i can't open from
Xnews jpg's with the Fax veiwer. All these files were
originally in yEnc... I am really new to newsgroups and
video stuff so there's probably a simple explanation.
Any ideas?

Greetings,

First of all, have you checked the file extension to verify it's being
saved as an .mpg or .mpeg? If it originally was a yEnc file, does
XNews decode yEnc files? It may have just saved it as a yEnc file, not
as mpg.
