Mpegs that played in W98 Windows media player do not play
in Windows XP Professional. Is there a solution? W98
crashed beyond repair so I recently installed WXP Pro.

You probably need to reinstall your DVD software..... but what kind of MPEG
file are we talking about here.... MPEG is many different variations...

DVD software is not needed for MPEG. It is only needed for MPEG4, which is
DVD video,

Windows Media Player 9 play the standard Mpeg 1 to 3 .

I do not have DVD. Only CD. The Mpegs were simply
downloaded months ago before XP was installed. When I try
to play them, I'm asked to connect to WMP, which I do,
but then get a message saying "Error downloading codecs."

You need to find out what codecs you need for the files and then do a
net search to find them and install them. WMP always never seems to
be able to find a codec when it goes out to the web to look for one.
Must not be anything posted at the site it is checking.
