The only work I did on the Registry was to check my list of MCI settings to
the list provided by Sonia's list provided in her troubleshooting notes.
When I "uninstalled" office it was a little scary, and then reinstalling
it... everything seemed to come back to exactly the way it was.... toolbars
etc. I thought that was weird. It didn't appear that office had actually
been deleted.
So... the problem persists.
There is another person here (Aug 26 "mpeg failure") that has experienced
exactly the same issue.
He and I have been sharing...but no solutions yet.

Tom, you mentioned deleting Real, reinstalling Office, and reinstalling
Windows. But I don't see where you did any registry dive to fix the MCI
registry settings.
That would be my first step...

Having reformatted my own system earlier this month, I'd rather eat buffalo dung
than do that again. However, sometimes it's the only way to get a
system
back
under your own control. I don't recommend it as a step to eternal happiness,
but if you must make the MPEG file work and converting to another
format
or
codec is not an option, then go for it. Whatever you do, don't ever
allow
Real
Player on your system again if you want to use multimedia in
PowerPoint.
I did uninstall Real Player, and confirmed the list as supplied on your
site... but the problem continues.
My next step is to wipe my hard drive and reload my life and my work
on
to
it.... a fresh start.
Might be easier than trying to find and fix the problem....
What do you think... How do I get my old settings / files back?

Aug 26... two of us posted this mci error with no satisfaction..
I have tried a number of things to correct the error...
One idea is that Real Player did "hijack" my MCI settings /
files...
I have
deleted Real Player, but the problem continues.
How do I get my settings back..
I have deleted all of office and reinstalled it... That didn't
work
either.
I reinstalled Windows too... That didn't work.
Very frustrating.
