Aug 26... two of us posted this mci error with no satisfaction..

I have tried a number of things to correct the error...

One idea is that Real Player did "hijack" my MCI settings / files... I have
deleted Real Player, but the problem continues.

How do I get my settings back..

I have deleted all of office and reinstalled it... That didn't work either.

I reinstalled Windows too... That didn't work.

Very frustrating.

Has the problem changed any? By that I mean, are you still getting the same
message or is the sound file just not working?

The problem has not changed any...

By coincidence, as I was about to post this problem on Aug. 26, another user
was complaining of exactly the same issue. Read back for details if you like
Sonia... "mpeg failure" Aug.26.

I have tried a few things now... nothing has corrected the problem.

I have checked my registry lists as directed in your articles.

I really have a feeling that my diddling with Real Player one evening last
week may have been the culprit, but now, I don't know how to get things the
way they were before that.

The problem is that the mpegs play in show mode... but in edit mode, after
"playing" with a double click... clicking outside the box gives and "MCI
error"

T

I did uninstall Real Player, and confirmed the list as supplied on your
site... but the problem continues.

My next step is to wipe my hard drive and reload my life and my work on to
it.... a fresh start.

Might be easier than trying to find and fix the problem....

What do you think... How do I get my old settings / files back?

Having reformatted my own system earlier this month, I'd rather eat buffalo dung
than do that again. However, sometimes it's the only way to get a system back
under your own control. I don't recommend it as a step to eternal happiness,
but if you must make the MPEG file work and converting to another format or
codec is not an option, then go for it. Whatever you do, don't ever allow Real
Player on your system again if you want to use multimedia in PowerPoint. <G>

Tom, you mentioned deleting Real, reinstalling Office, and reinstalling
Windows. But I don't see where you did any registry dive to fix the MCI
registry settings.

That would be my first step...

The only work I did on the Registry was to check my list of MCI settings to
the list provided by Sonia's list provided in her troubleshooting notes.

When I "uninstalled" office it was a little scary, and then reinstalling
it... everything seemed to come back to exactly the way it was.... toolbars
etc. I thought that was weird. It didn't appear that office had actually
been deleted.

So... the problem persists.

There is another person here (Aug 26 "mpeg failure") that has experienced
exactly the same issue.

He and I have been sharing...but no solutions yet.

ROFL!!!

FOOD THREAD!!!

Brian says it's pretty good sauteed in olive oil with capers and a little garlic.
I dunno .... I'll stick to raw fish.

WRT reformatting, there's always Virtual PC or VMware (at 130 or 200 bucks
respectively, very round numbers). With a few spare gigs of disk space and a
reasonable amount of memory, you can install another copy of Windows w/o losing
the existing one. That would also isolate video card issues.

Buffalo dung? No thanks. Now, buffalo chili - that's pretty good :)
So says the resident chef!

I believe life is meant to be lived. But:
if we live without making a difference, it makes no difference that we lived

at this rate, I could start losing weight.

Anyway...

One thing that might tweak you folks is that I am UNABLE to "drag and drop"
an mpeg into a slide. My colleague can do this.

Also, I'm on Window XP and Office 2003. Should I do anything with the
win.ini and system.ini as suggested in you notes Sonia. I didn't bother.

Tom

No. For Windows XP system the MCI settings are in the Registry. If there is
not an exact match, line for line, your Registry should be edited to make it
match.

Buffalo dung here I come.

I have duplicated the lists as suggested.

Sonia, did you read the thread Aug. 26 "mpeg failure" from the person that
is experiencing the same MCI error? It was so strange that he posted the
same day that I did. However.

Since I reinstalled Windows and Office... then uninstalled Real Player... I
am going to try the reinstall on windows again tomorrow.

Because the error only occurs while in edit mode, it is very odd. The
presentations play top to bottom without the error. The MCI error only shows
following playback of the mpeg in the frame on a right click "play"... as
soon as I click again, I get the error and am unable to get out except a
Ctl-Alt-Del.. and close. Even then, on the close, I am not given an option
to send an error report.

Tom

What version of DirectX are you on? 9.0c is the latest and upgrading has
been known to solve some video issues.

If it plays in slide show mode, can you live without playing it in Edit mode?
No one seems familiar with the problem or a solution.
