My Sony MiniDV Camcorder says it records video in MPEG EX format. I
searched the web, but couldn't find a description of this format. Is it
MPEG-1, MPEG-2, or something completely different? Could someone please
describe what MPEG EX is? Thanks.

Hi Bob
I think I ahve a similar problem. I ahve a Sony DCR-IP7E
and WMM does not recognise the format of the files. I
tried using Movie Shaker 3.1 but the sytem crashes also. I
use a Dell Inspiron 8200.

Any info you have on capturing MICROMV would be very useful

Regards

Pat

I don't have any experience capturing MICROMV, but I found the following
info at www.papajohn.org
Sony MicroMV cameras output an MPEG-2 stream, and Microsoft currently does
not have the right to distribute the MPEG-2 codec. You can capture using
Sony's Movie Shaker software bundled with the MicroMV's, and then use it to
export to DV-AVI for import into Movie Maker 2 for editing. The reverse
process would need to be used to take a movie from Movie Maker 2 and export
it to the MicroMV camcorder.

Here's a link to Sony's support site for digital video.
