MP3 tracks automatically converted into WMA

Hello,

I use WMP10 as the satnderd player and I have these MP3 tracks I want to
send to someone else (legally) via email or via YouSendIT but each time I
want to do this, the mp3's are automatically converted into .WMA which I
don't want as my friend don't use WMP.

The tracks self are really mp3's (the extensions and the icons show that)
and when sending them I expect them to stay as a mp3, but they now turn into
WMA which is strange as this had never happend before. (All worked fine till
last week, and I hadn't changed anything)

Anyone know how to solve this problem?

Lee

+( I know my friend can use a MP3 converter, but as he has a really old
pc/dial up modem it's faster if I'm sending the MP3's)

As a test, send it to yourself and see if it changes. It may be a problem at
the other end.

I just send it to myself, one directly to my yahoo account and one via
YouSendIt and both times the mp3 track has been automatically converted into
..WMA :(

Any other ideas then?

It may be your system that is changing the format of the MP3. Go to:
Open WMP>Tools>Options>File Types tab
Now uncheck WMA and check MP3
Click Apply and OK.

I don't see how a mail programme can convert from mp3 to .wma files.

Are you using WMP to make your mp3 files ? Bad move, use Audacity from here
:

http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

Either way, it doesn't really matter which format you send them in, they're
both compressed.

BTW, your friend, what does he/she use as a player ? WinAmp can read .wma
files.

Cheers,
jerry

I thought that must be the problem as the box for WMA was indeed checked and
the mp3 box not. BUT I have changed that, clicked on 'OK' and tried it again
and it's still sending in .WMA! :/

No no, I haven't made the mp3 files myself (but an other friend has) .

The friend I'm trying to send the mp3 track to is using Winamp and he
claimed he couldn't play the .wma file.

Ah well, I'll convince him to use a mp3 converter..

Thanks for the tips anyway all!

Let us get this clear.

You go to your mail program and attach xxx.mp3 to a message.
The program shows that xxx.mp3 is attached.
You send it to yourself.
The attachment you receive is xxx.wma.

That is not possible unless you have some kind of conversion utility running
in the background.

Not exactly, it's:

A)
-In my yahoo and gmail accounts I attach the mp3 file, xxx.mp3
-When mp3 file is attached, I see the song isn't xxx.mp3 anymore, but xxx.wma

B)- In Step 1 of YouSendIt.com I put the receivers emailaddress (or mine to
test it)

- In Step 2 I have to select the file I want to transfer, is this case
xxx.mp3

- Step 3 = Send It

After a while I'll receive the track, but again in .wma

This is really weird as both ways used to work perfectly with sending mp3's
to others. (I've tried it with 'original' mp3's and converted mp3's)

Try using Outlook Express. It will NOT convert.

Are you sure you're sending an mp3 file ? Your friend normally will have WMP
installed on his/her PC. So that should read the .wma files if WinAmp for
whatever reason can't.

Cheers,
Jerry

I haven't used Outlook Express for 3 years, but perhaps I should try it again..

And I'm really REALLY sure I'm sending MP3 files :)
(I've done this before without problems)

Anyway thanks again,

Lee
