MP3 to MIDI application

Which is the best MP3 to MIDI freeware application?

I don't know about MP3, but I fear the problem is much the same as wav to
midi, in that it's very dfficult, or possibly impossible, and AFAIK has not
been done acceptably.

Certainly none of the progs that I have tried come close.

The problem is that to make midi into a music format, the computer
synthesises sounds according to midi notation, much like an orchestra plays
a score.

Good orchestra, good instruments, heaven, crap soundcard, crap soundfonts,
not so good, but at least the job can be attempted.

But to make a wav file into midi requires that the complex waveform, which
can vary enormously depending on who played it and how, be analysed back
into the musician's score, or that a cake is separated back into it's
precooked ingedients.

AKAIK it can't be done.

And if it can and has been, someone will shortly step up to enlighten us
both, which will make me happy, because I'd like one, too

Just as a curiosity, I mention this FORMER freeware program
http://www.mp3towav.org/TS-AudioToMIDI/.

Being a composer who works in midi most of the time, I downloaded the
freeware version of this a long time back but never tried to convert
anything. So I have no idea how good it is. But it is interesting that there
is such software out there... too bad this one no longer is freeware.

I downloaded that one too but you're right, it's now shareware so
there's no point in providing a link to it in this group.
