Whenever I right click on an mp3 file and select properties, no information
is there. All that is available is track number, title, and comments with
nothing filled in. There is information there if I look at it from within a
program (e.g. Winamp). How can I get Windows to recognize the information in
the file? (This used to work until I reinstalled Windows). Thanks.

Not the ultimate answer, but:

Windows does not seem to recognize all sorts and versions of tags. I notice
that with JPG-files (images) too.
MP3 has at least two versions of tag layout - and *may* (I'm not sure)
support only one.

Moreover, you might have had some extension installed previously that "knows
better". I use the one found at http://www.mutschler.de/mp3ext.

Thanks, that is is a neat program. I like all the information it gives, but
I guess the main reason I need windows to recognize the mp3 files is so I
will be able to say arrange icons by track number. Thanks.

You're welcome. :-)

Off-topic, but you (and other readers of this thread) might be interested:

You could rename several types of data files based on tag fields
(batch-wise, as opposed to the obvious manual way).

A general approach to (viewing and) renaming is Total Commander (shareware,
http://www.ghisler.com/), for the purpose at hand augmented by some plug-in
(nearly all freeware, http://www.totalcmd.net/).
(There are many other Norton Commander look-alikes.)

A specific way of renaming files is NIYoW (shareware,
http://www.niyow.com/). I could recommend it for those who have downloaded
lots of MIDI-files with clueless names (like b001.mid).
You'll have to stick around, as MIDI-files tend to contain clues in
unintended places (like track names). Still... :-)
