Hi,

I am having some problems playing MP3 files in Winamp.
Whenever I play some selected files, it plays for a few
seconds and then a weird high-pitched beeping starts. This
may be due to how the file was encoded. Is there any way to
correct this problem?

Any help is much appreciated,

Damon

You've probably downloaded one of many deliberately-created bogus music
files. It's the recording industry's way of making people annoyed with
filesharing networks in the hopes that you'll just end up going out and
buying the CD. Try playing the problem music files with another media
player, like Windows Media Player for instance. It'll sound exactly the
same if I'm correct. When a CD is first released, these fake tracks vastly
outnumber genuine files on the FastTrack (Kazaa) network, but after a few
weeks the genuine files quickly outnumber the fakes.

Ian.

Ian,

Is this true for all p2p? I don't use Kazaa for that reaons and for
dozens of others, not the least of which is the inherent spyware in
kazaa. Using winMX for 2 yrs, I rarely have issues with "fake" files.

According to folks posting in the p2p-related groups, some filesharing
networks have far fewer fakes than FastTrack/Kazaa. EMule seems widely
praised for genuine files and I haven't heard people in the WinMX newsgroup
complain about the problem. (They seem too busy complaining about the time
spent in queues from what I see.)

I have almost no problems with fakes on Kazaa at all, probably because I'm
almost never using it to download current music. There is a completely
spyware-free version of Kazaa available here: http://doa2.host.sk/ It's the
one I use- Lazaa Lite K++. Instead of spyware/adware, it comes bundled with
helpful downloading tools to speed your downloads, etc. instead.

Regards,
Ian.
