Works fine with my laptop. Plug it in, device gets detected no problem
and pops up as a removable disk.

With my desktop PC, it detects then attempts to install it, but it
never appears as a device. Also, seems to hang PC until device is
unplugged.

Admitedly, quite possibly, things have been changed on my desktop PC
but what is the first thing to check?

I've also got all the USB ports in use (5) so is there a chance the bus
is being overloaded ?

check the device manager for "Enhanced" under the USB Controller. Your PC
might not support USB2 or as in what I had was my Antec case did not. Which
Antec sent me a replacement that worked great

Already checked that...

Funnily enough, like I said, this MP3 player seems to work fine on my
work laptop.

Also, my USB memory stick works fine on both my home PC and work
laptop. Problem seems restricted to my home PC with this MP3 player.
