MP3 file runs fine in the project but gets weird when saved?

Have a 4:45 minute project laid out. It involves one MP3 file that I imported
and then laid maybe 40 or so pictures in the video bar. I got all the
transitions done how I wanted and two or three spots where I put in title
overlays. Added a few short credits at the end. File runs exactly 4:45.

The file runs PERFECTLY when I run it within WMM, timing is great, and the
title overlays hit perfectly on their marks.

But then I went to save it as various types of video files and it just will
not save correctly.

Comparing the saved files (they save the same as I have tried many formats)
I can see that the file length is the same and the pictures are at the same
timestamps. But the mp3 tweaks just enough in the saved files to ruin the
overlay titles. I dont know how else to fix them other than to remove them.

Should add that it looks like the mp3 is almost getting compressed in the
saved file.

The mp3 runs out on the PC at 4:38 - on the saved files its at 4:22

Checking at points along the way it looks like this is a gradual process.

So the video/picture/transition piece of the saved file runs as it does on
the PC, but it runs out of audio 10 seconds early and continues on.

Anyone?
