I presently have Netscape and MSIE on my system but would like to try
Mozilla 1.6 web and email suite before I delete any of the others to
make sure I like it. Can I run Mozilla 1.6 web and email suite
without removing the others??
TIA
You didn't mention what version of Netscape you're using, so a word of
caution. Netscape 6.x/7.x are basically Mozilla with some extra AOL
stuff added. When you install them, the executables and other program
files are, by default, installed in different locations. The problem is
that they both use the same folder for the storage of user profiles. In
Windows XP, for example, this is going to be C:\Documents and
Settings\%username%\Application Data\Mozilla . (Note that the
Application Data folder is hidden. You may need to tell Windows to
display hidden folders in order to see it.)
In that folder will be two files, pluginreg.dat and registry.dat.
Registry.dat is essentially a file that contains pointers to existing
user profiles, which will normally be in C:\Documents and
Settings\%username%\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles .
If you install Mozilla, with Netscape 6.x/7.x already installed, it will
see the Nescape profile. DO NOT start Mozilla with the Netscape profile.
Use the Mozilla profile manager to create a new, separate profile to use
with Mozilla. Then whenever you start Mozilla or Netscape, select the
appropriate profile.
I have both Netscape 7.1 and Mozilla 1.6 installed on the same computer.
I rarely use NS7.1, and only then when someone at work asks me a
Netscape question. Because of this, I actually renamed Netscape's
registry.dat and pluginreg.dat files before I installed Mozilla, which
then created it's own copies of those files. When I want to use
Netscape, I rename Mozilla's .dat files and then change the Netscape
..dat files back to their original names before launching Netscape. What
I'm trying to say here is that I keep separate sets of .dat files for
Mozilla and Netscape and rename them as appropriate when I switch from
Mozilla to Netscape and back.
If you use Netscape with a Mozilla profile and vice versa, you'll get
peculiar behavior and probably corrupt the profiles.
