Can anyone tell me why my Mozilla 1.7.1 browser using win98SE would freeze
on this site (and others) forcing a complete shutdown/reboot?.It doesn't
happen using IE5.
I'm guessing something to do with java script but not sure, the "lake
applet" forces a reboot too. I am going to see if anyone here knows
something about it or, barring that, I going back to good old netscrape
4.78

Works fine on K-Meleon 0.9 (based on Mozilla 1.7.5 code), win98se,
javascript disabled.
It seems more likely that it's a java problem rather than a
javascript problem. The site invites me to download the java-plugin.

It did not freeze on my Win2k (Multi-zilla) or my Linux box (Firefox) at
all. Looking at the code, all I saw was javascript...no Lake Applet at
all. I must have missed what you saw...

Thanks all...
I should have said that the lake applet freezes my mozilla whenever I go
near it. It wasn't on that particular page.
So it would appear that Java *is* what is the problem.
I will give it one more try before the big switch back.

thanks!

Why switch back to a prehistoric browser? The browser is clearly not
the problem, your Java runtime is.

If things don't work out, just de-install your Java Runtime
Environment (JRE), and install a newer version (1.5.0) again. That
might solve some problems.

Wald

Thanks Wald, I shifted back to ns 7.1 and will try that runtime switch.
I don't even remember where that java runtime (v 1.4) install came from,
could be senility though.
thanks!

I use Firefox (haven't visited this site though). I actually
switched java off completely in it's options. It certainly has
improved my browsing.

There are 2 things that really give me the s..ts on websites -
java & flash. Recommendation to anyone creating their own site -
leave out the bells and whistles & make your site practical. I
use a flash-blocker, so I don't see flash animations anyway
unless I click on the substituted links. It becomes a pain when
the menu options are all flash buttons with the actual links
http://......../text1.swf, text2.swf etc. Usually I just surf
away from flash-using sites without even bothering to look at
anything.

Same with java - another pain-in-the-ass. Why my browser should
have to boot up a large plugin just to display a site menu is
beyond me. Again, I just surf away and go to more user-friendly
sites.

PS: I am on dial-up - definitely not flash-friendly.
