Have any of you Moz users managed to change the directories that are
used by default for the email archives? I don't want them under
\windows\application data and would prefer to locate them elsewhere.

For Thunderbird :

1/ Thunderbird
2/ Tools
3/ Account parameters
4/ Choose the desired account(s)
5/ For each desired account -> Server parameters
6/ Local folder

Note :
- the steps above are the french steps (re)translated in english
- you probably will have to shut down and restart Thunderbird

I looked but there isn't any selection under Tools that leads to
folder selection in Mozilla.

I looked at Mozilla-v1.6-en ; it looks as though the technique
described above for thunderbird is the following one :

Mozilla
Edit
Mail & newsgroups account settings
Choose an mail/newsgroup account
Server settings
Local directory

Thanks. Changing it while preserving its current data and folders is
tricky but I'm working on it :)

Can't you simply make a copy of your "C:\WINDOWS\Application
Data\Mozilla\Profiles" folders somewhere and then put it in the new
location after you configure your location?

It's not that simple (for some reason that I haven't determined).
Mozilla then comes up as if it had never been run before, insisting
that a profile be created, etc. It automatically creates a new
subdirectory structure off the start of that new one you create ...
without the folders and data. I did eventually get it but it was a
real hassle.

There must be a better way, but I'm not wasting any more time trying
to find one now that I managed to get it the way I want it.

Makes sense to me.

The defined location of all of these live in the prefs.js file in your
profile directory. You can get to these settings using about:config but
probably the way to do what you're looking to do is, with Moz/TBird
closed, move your data then edit the prefs file with a text editor doing
a global replace of the locations from old to new.

When you restart Moz/TBird it should look in the new places to find
things. (Don't forget any locations you may have redefined in user.js.)

CAVEAT: I've moved a few things around in this way but YMMV.

and don't forget you will have to edit/recreate the registry.dat file
that's above your profile dir in the Moz/Tbird folder itself which
contains info about what and where any profiles are to be found.

Thanks Charles. Right at the moment I'm in a "leave well enough alone"
mood as I posted to John. I managed to fuddle my way into a functional
transplant of the email archives/folders to a different directory.
Since it's been working fine I'm inclined to not spend any time trying
to figure out how to "do it right" :) The only negative effect I wound
up with is a redundant subdirectory structure created by Mozilla. But
it's no big deal since it wastes little drive space.

Well, as a Thunderbird user, what I do is run thunderbird.exe with the
-p switch the first time I install it. This allows me to create my
profile and choose where it's stored, before actually running the mail
client. That way, Thunderbird doesn't get a chance to go about its
kooky placement system (application data\blahdiblahdi.slt or
whatever).

Beyond that, I would suggest looking into the Mozilla Backup utility
(http://backup.jasnapaka.com/). This allows you to backup and restore
profiles easily without having to figure out where they're stored.
Works really well.

Actually, a backup/restore strategy is the reason I wanted to relocate
the email archives. I don't want that data in the Windows subdirectory
structure. I use a backup hard drive on a removable tray. One of the
partitions on the backup drive only stores Windows. I want to be able
to restore only Windows from that partition. It should have no data
files. Backing up data, including email archives which get updated
many times daily, requires a different and separate backup approach.

The lesson was to set Mozilla up the way you want it in the first
place, since relocating the email archives was no picnic :)
