Right click on the shortcut, select properties, and change "target" to read:
"C:\Program Files\mozilla.org\Mozilla\mozilla.exe" /nosplash

Select the option to keep a portion of Moz in memory. Not only does
that eliminate the splash screen, but Moz will load _much_ faster.

Does Firefox have this same option? I don't see it anywhere.

Just out of curiousity, why would you want to disable the splash screen?

I don't think so. With Moz, it's under Advanced. There's a Quick
Launch item there which can be checked.

With the Mozilla suite, I also created an extra icon exclusively for
email. The target is:

c:\ProgramFiles\mozilla.org\Mozilla\mozilla.exe /mail

The /mail switch does the trick. I have one icon named Mozilla
Navigator and another one named Mozilla Mail. That way I can zap into
either almost instantly from the desktop.

It's this Quick Launch feature that caused me to use the Moz suite
instead of the FF and TB combo. I rather like Moz email and have
converted over to it after many years using Pegasus. However, I'll
probably never quit using Free Agent for news :)

B/C it nags?
I have to admid I don't like it either. Wouldn't be the first time I dumped
an application just for displaying nag screens. I don't mind if they do, as
long as I can switch it off.

Art, seems to me that if a person is running a W9x version of windows
that this eats up too much in the way of resources. Correct me if I'm
wrong. At any rate, I prefer the /nosplash option in the shortcut
command line.

It's not really a nag, simply an announcement (albeit unnecessary)
that the program is starting. A nag would urge you to purchase or
register something.

However, I hate startup screens and find them a totally unnecessary
waste of resources and time.

I see two options here:

# 1 - replace the splash screen (built-in) with one of your own
making. Must be a BMP file and named "mozilla.bmp", placing it in the
directory where mozilla.exe resides. This is a "roll-your-own" solution!

# 2 - same as above but create an empty, i.e. NO IMAGE data BMP
and place it in the same location!

Either of the above solutions should provide you with what you
want, i.e. a different splash screen, or NO (visible) splash screen.

No problems at all with resources here. Win ME on a Hp Pavilion 900mhz
PIII with 128 RAM and Windows managing the swap file (beautifully).
This "old" machine really screeches :) Never notice any sluggishness
or slowdowns.

When I tried that a warning popped up to say I would also have to
change the target name. Is that possible?

What I noticed is that, if one has several user profiles, each with
its own startup shortcut on the (win98) desktop, the preload feature
disregards them and starts the profile-picker, _not_ Mozilla.
Personally, I'd rather wait a couple of extra seconds than dick around
clickety-clicking. Am I doing something wrong? Besides posting, I
mean....

I share this point of view.

Unfortunately, FF does not have it and from what I read a while ago
there are no plans to add it. Too bad. It and a decent bookmarks
utility would be a great help to FF.

Sounds good to me. And the main reason I don't go for the tray icon
(portions of Moz running in background) is that I have a shortcut on
my desktop to a batch file that starts Webwasher, a cookie filtering
program and Mozilla all at once.

Personally, I do not need an announcement telling me what command line
or Icon I have invoked. It is sort of like going to someones house and
ringing the doorbell and in addition to the bell, you get a note popping
up stating "You have rang the doorbell". It is redundant.

However, that is just my opinion.
