1. When uninstalling the older version, do NOT delete the old program
folder and their contents which weren't deleted. If you do, you'll
lose all your settings and plugins.

I by the way, did not make this mistake.

2. Even though you're not prompted to do so, before you install the
new version REBOOT after you uninstall the old one in order to remove
old registry entries.

3. NOW install 1.7 Final.

4. Reinstall your favorite Extensions, since they will have
disappeared with the old version. Remember, Extensions are third part.

I notice that the idiotic, hated and *totally unnecessary* "Local
Folders" are back in the mail and news reader (FU** how I wish they'd
get rid of this garbage along with the superfluous, persistant and
disruptive need to compress account folders in the module.)

I went through hell last time getting rid of the "Local Folders", but
succeeded ultimately. Here is how I did it (forgot who provided this
info originally):

How do I get rid of the "Local Folders" in Mail/News?

You don't want to do this, these folders actually serve a purpose
(Mozilla uses the Local Folders to save postings to newsgroups for
example) and should best be left alone. There is a way to remove them,
but please note that the Local Folders will be recreated whenever you
add a new account.

To remove Local Folders:

1. Close Mozilla completely.

2. In your profile directory, delete "\Mail\Local Folders".
Open the file prefs.js with your favorite text editor and delete any
reference to Local folders, especially:

user_pref("mail.server.server2.directory", "C:\\WINDOWS\\APPLICATION
DATA\\Mozilla\\profiles\\YourProfile\\xxxxxxxx.slt\\Mail\\Local
Folders");
user_pref("mail.server.server2.hostname", "Local Folders");
user_pref("mail.server.server2.name", "Local Folders");
user_pref("mail.server.server2.type", "none");
user_pref("mail.server.server2.userName", "nobody");
user_pref("mail.root.none", "C:\\WINDOWS\\APPLICATION
DATA\\Mozilla\\profiles\\DeinProfil\\xxxxxxxx.slt\\Mail");
user_pref("mail.accountmanager.localfoldersserver", "server2");

Note: "server2" is just an example. The name might be different on
your system (server3, server4, and so on). Save prefs.js and restart
Netscape. Local Folders should be gone now. Adjust settings in news
server accounts (especially Sent Items).

This worked perfectly in Moz 1.6 Final, but I haven't tried it yet
with 1.7.

It didn't work at all. Now there are TWO "Local Folders" accounts.
Does ANYBODY have a clue as to how I can get rid of those damned
folders? This is really starting to piss me off big time.

Managed to get it back to one instance of the Local Folders.

By the way, some of the extensions DID remain after uninstalling 1.6.
Flash blocker and a few others. Prefbar needed reinstalling as did
"Nukeanything", and the latter was problematic. However, I got it
hammered out eventually.

Most extensions can be installed to your profile in the WINDOWS
directory - you won't need to reinstall them as uninstalling Mozilla
still leaves your profile untouched (favourites, mail accounts etc.
There are a few extensions that only install into the Mozilla
directory, but they are the minority. Whenever I install an
extension I always save the file to another directory, and then runit
to install. That way, when Mozilla is upgraded, I've got my
extensions all ready to be installed.

Use the freeware AllDone to check if you need to reboot after
installing or uninstalling any programs. Download from
http://www.comcen.com.au/~scottford/_sgt/m2m1_1.htm (60Kb).

Favourites should not have been affected as they are stored in your
profile directory. Things such as email,favourites, user settings
should never be affected after an install/uninstall unless the user
has chosen to use the Mozilla program directory to store their
profile (definitely not the recommended option).

That has been my experience, too. Although I religiously backup the
profiles directories before upgrading, I have used the online upgrade
service since v1.3.1 with no problems. Never actually have uninstalled
the existing version before upgrading.
