Configuration of Appearance/Fonts in Mozilla Thunderbird Mail/News 0.6
is a bit confusing to me and I can't seem to get the combination
I want ....

The main changes I'd like to make are changing the background-color
and font-size of the *thread/message-list* pane ....

I could read micro-fonts fine when I was about 11 years old,
but I'm working on 60 now and they are just too small
for my old and tired eyes, and although I've managed
to reset the background-color for the message pane,
the remaining blaring-white background of the threads pane
is still knocking my eyeballs out ....

There seems to me to be no straight-forward way to do this,
so after a bit of Google-izing I found the following reference
for *Customizing Mozilla* that suggests that the attributes
I want to change may be configurable by sticking a couple of
CSS files in the user_xxx/profile/chrome directory and editing
them appropriately ....

http://www.mozilla.org/unix/customizing.html

I´m fairly adept at CSS and would know the proper CSS coding
for the attributes I want to change, but I *DON"T* know
which *css class* designators to add them to ....

body { .... }
window { .... }
textarea { .... }
???????? { .... }

Which ones apply to the threads/message-list pane ????

Any Clues ????

Not sure if this is quite what you need, but this is in my userChrome.css

Unread posts are red and a slightly larger font.
Threads with any unread in, are highlighted with a light yellow.

treechildren::-moz-tree-cell-text(unread) {
font-size: 10pt ! important;
font-family : Tahoma, Arial, Verdana, sans-serif ! important;
font-weight: normal ! important;
color: #D50000 !important
}

treechildren::-moz-tree-cell-text(container, closed, hasUnread, read) {
background-color: #ffc ! important;
text-decoration: bold;
}

Cousin Podz ....

That lookes like the right stuff !!!!

Now I just have to find the proper profile directory
under an OS that I've only worked with for about 4 days ....

Linux .... Debian .... Knoppix 3.2 .... HDD Install

Thanks very much for the info ....

Just a minor correction, although on many UNIX and UNIX-like systems the
home directories appear under /home, it is by no means universal.

It is common to simply write "~/whatever..." where the '~' means "your
home directory".

Or, alternatively, and "purer" Bourne shell "$HOME/whatever".

Cousin Tiger ....

Thanks for the info ....

You were definitely in the right ballpark to locate
the Mozilla TB <profile>/..../chrome directory ....

On this machine ....

/home/userName/.mozilla-thunderbird/default/SALT_MESS.slt/chrome

However, it was quite a pain to find it,
since the Moz TB <profile> folder was HIDDEN
in the /home/userName directory ....

It didn't show up in Konsole dir or ls commands,
and didn't show up in Konqueror browser views ....

How is an ordinary mortal supposed to find it
or even know how it is named in a particular install
if it is HIDDEN by default ....

Is the hidden directory attribute standard procedure
when creating default Moz and/or Moz_TB profiles ????

There is NO entry into the Profile Manager from the menus
in the Mozilla TB Version 0.6 that I have, which seems to be
a functional omission that I don't understand, since at least
under Moz Navigator there is a Tools/Switch Profile option ....

After searching a bit in the Moz docs, I found a reference
for starting Mozilla with a command-line option to start
the Profile Manager ....

mozilla -profilemanager

So I tried ....

mozilla-thunderbird -profilemanager

Which worked and after creating a NEW profile,
showed me where it was going to stick, so I could
now *GUESS* where the default profile was,
only I couldn't see it since it was HIDDEN ....

A lucky guess with the change dir command
eventually got me into the proper zone,
and after sticking a copy of Cousin Podz
userChrome.css file into the /chome folder,
I have actually observed some configuration changes
and can now begin to tweak them for personal prefs ....

Simple appearance configs of this type
shouldn't be this big of a hassle,
and hopefully, future versions of Moz TB
will make it a bit easier on me and everyone else ....

I used and liked the KNode news client when I was experimenting
with Linux Mandrake 10 CE, but don't think it's available
via apt-get update/upgrade under Knoppix 3.2 without
serious KDE and dependent updates first ....

Is KNode available under Knoppix 3.4 ????

If so, I might nuke this knx-3.2 version
before I'm too far engrained ....

Dunno...I'm using the drake.

4 letters...slrn :)

Cousin Tiger ....

Thanks again for the info ....

I'll check the Knoqueror view menu for hidden file options .....

I do have the slrn news client installed,
but the config seemed like it could be a pain ....

Is it ????

If I had the Linux Mandrake 10 Official CDs in hand,
I would probably give it a shot, but don't want to download
another 2 GB at the moment and burn the ISO file CDs ....

I THOUGHT I had the Mdk_10 Offical Edition,
but on closer checking it turned out to be
the Mdk_10 Community Edition .

Even with some kind help over in the Mandrake NewsGroup,
I still couldn't manage to keep my aDSL modem connected
under Mdk_10 Community ....

The connection problem cannot be the with the hardware,
nic/modem/router since it works flawlessly under Debian/Knoppix,
and also the DSL service provider checked the lines
and the ISP diagnostic line checks were also OK ....

Also, after a bit of testing here, I think Mandrake 10
may be pushing the cpu performance and memory limits
of the old and slow machine that I use ....

250 MHz Compaq with 192 MB memory ....

When I get a machine with a few more horsepower,
Mandrake 10 will probably be the first OS I try ....

Nah...just read the docs. I can help you.

If you have broadband, I'd recommend ftp installation.

Easy enough to upgrade via urpmi.

It should work on that machine...KDE is probably what would slow things
down. I use fluxbox...much faster.

The modem thing is puzzling...but I'm guessing it had to do with your
configuration...my blind guess would be the resolve.conf, which seems to
cause a few problems (it did me).

Thanks .... All help greatly appreciated ....

I'd already started developing an attitude
about Moz Mail/News and Moz_TB Mail/News
because of the hassles with basic appearance configs,
and last night about 11 p.m. while typing a reply
to THIS very message, Moz_TB Compose decided to close
itself just when I was proof-reading and getting ready
to send losing the entire message ....

This has happened a couple of other times
and I'm fairly certain I did nothing other
than press the Down-Arrow key ....

I will definitely check the slrn docs
a bit closer ....
....

I do have aDSL broadband and will check out
the Mandrake ftp install ....

Unfortunately, too late now as I've already nuked it
since I was too dumb to realize this was possible
at the time ....
It should work on that machine...

KDE is probably what would slow things down.

I use fluxbox...much faster.

Mandrake 10 CE did mostly work OK on this machine,
but I did experience a few pregnant-pauses, mostly
in the KDE Control Center config section, that I
thought were a bit much ....

However, this could also have been Cousin Stanley induced,
since I'm not sure I had the swap file set up properly
and if I had DMA activated on the drives ....

....

It is puzzling, but also probably Cousin Stanley induced
due to mis-configuration, and hopefully some quirk of Mdk_10 CE
that goes away in Mdk_10 Official ....

Now that I have a stable OS and good connection,
I'll check the dslReports boards for others
that might happen to use Mandrake 10 with the
same particular aDSL modem that I use ....

Thanks again for the info ....
