Moving XP

I think I already know most of the answers. The kids bought and
built a new mid tower case with a new motherboard and a PIV xxx
Ghz processor and one of those huge Gigabyte hard drives. State
of the art stuff to replace my PIII 450 and keep me on the cutting
edge of reading my email, writing 10 letters a year, and playing
with the grandkids' pictures.

I recently had a crash on this system when it had 98 SE on it. My
IT boy talked me into buying and installing XP Pro. It has taken
me since early October to learn the program (yeah, right!) and get
the windows, colors, and interface usually doing what I want it to
do. I have all my software loaded and running well, except . . .
.. (I'm looking for an XP driver for my 4 year old scanner, and.
.. ., and . . . )

I would really like to just move my present hard drive to the new
box as master and let the new drive be a slave. Can it make the
trip to a new motherboard and chip? My boy tells me I want to
Ghost (?) my system onto the newer faster drive. I dread
reloading all the stuff and fiddling with settings, etc for weeks
on end. Any way?

I've successfully moved hard drives, as well as ghosted
them. But there have been times when it didn't work. In
general, XP is good at recognizing HW changes and finding
new hardware. I would go for it. Worse that can happen
(well I THINK the worst that can happen *G*) is that
you'll have to put back the old motherboard, and will have
wasted a bit of time.

Dan, Listen to your boy. Get drive imaging software such as Ghost or Drive
Image by Powerquest. If you went to the
manufacturers site of the Scanner and they didnt have a WinXP driver but
did have a Win2000 driver you can try that.
