Dear Colleagues,

I installed XP Pro with its serial number, etc on what is now an old
dead machine. I want XP Pro for different machine now. Is there a
way to cancel the original "machine matching vs serial number" so it
can be moved? Does one go through Microsoft to do such a thing and, if
so, does anyone have a telephone number.

All inpupt is appreciated..

Thanks,

Mike

If you own COA and Product Key (Serial # ?), you can put it in different
machine.
You have full version?
What kind computer was it in?

Yes, I installed it on a Dell Workstation that came with NT 4.0. That
was "hot" back in 1998 when I first bought it from Dell :) I later
purchased XP Pro and installed it. Now, I'd like to move it to a Dell
420 laptop that I purchased used, that has XP Pro with a "corportate
license" from the prior owner on it. I'm unable to get upgrades, etc
on this laptop, hence I'd like to my licensed copy, on the dead
machine, to it. Maybe there is even a way to just change the laptop
Product Key to the one I own on the old machine?

Thanks,

Mike

Dear Nepatsfan,

I'm just a little confused here.. my CD Key is already registered to
the old NT machine. It hasn't been fired up in MONTHS+ but it IS
REGISTERED for that machine. Won't that matter or is there a way to
"deregister it" from the old NT machine?

Thanks,

Mike

That's the best part of having a "retail" copy of XP. The EULA
allows you to transfer the license from one computer to another
as long as it's no longer installed on the previous system.

Microsoft Windows XP Professional END-USER LICENSE AGREEMENT
(check out Section 4)
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/eula.mspx

Also. if it's been more than 120 days since you activated an
installation with that CD key, you'll probably be able to
activate over the internet. If you have any problems you should
be provided with a phone number that you can use to obtain
assistance in activating XP.

Here are a couple of web sites with info that you may find
helpful:

The EULA

I'm not MS legal but since the old computer is a doorstop, I would say that
comes close enough to being uninstalled. The point is that you'll be *using
that copy of XP on one computer only.*

That depends on what's toasted, making it a doorstop. If the HD is still in
working order it can be installed in another machine, of course with some work
to set all straight if it's to be the boot drive.

And what good would a working hard drive be in a toasted system? The drive
could be moved to the new system - the same one that XP is headed to
anyhow. Even with XP installed on the new system, if the old drive was
moved to yet another system -- removing XP from the old drive is all that's
required to satisfy the EULA.

No. There's no such thing as de-registration or de-activation, nor is one
required.

or is there a way
to
"deregister it" from the old NT machine?

If your copy of XP is a retail one, simply uninstall from the old computer,
and install it and activate it on the no one. That's all that's necessary.

But if your copy is an OEM one, its license permasnently ties it to the
first computer it's installed on, and you can not legally move it to
another.

Absolutely none at all.

The drive
could be moved to the new system - the same one that XP is headed to
anyhow.

I don't believe so unless he used it externally as the OP stated:

Even with XP installed on the new system, if the old drive was

required to satisfy the EULA.

That was my intended point.
