I've a PC that died & has XP Pro on it. I've the original CD from MS. How
can I legally move it to another PC?

Provided its a *retail* version you simply install it & activate, using
phone activation if online fails

Just install it. If it's been more than 120 days since you've made
any serious hardware changes, activation should go smoothly online.

If it's not an OEM version, just reinstall to the new machine. Non-OEM
versions are not tied to the original system.

In the probably unlikely event that you have to phone to activate, just say
you had to reinstall.

You might, however, want to slipstream your XP CD to SP3, which will save
you some time after the install. Download nLite and the full SP3 package
to another system, and use your XP CD to create a new ISO, which you will
then burn to CD.

Assuming a retail license (OEM licenses are not legitimately
transferable), simply remove WinXP from the computer it is currently on
and then install it on the new computer. If it's been more than 120
days since you last activated that specific Product Key, the you'll most
likely be able to activate via the Internet without problem. If it's
been less, you might have to make a 5 minute phone call.

Here are the facts pertaining to activation:

The PC was purchased unknowingly with a pirated version of XP on it but I
purchased a license/key from MS when it ran the Genuine Advantage after an
Update.

$145 from MS. Leery of those on eBay or anyone else on-line as I've already
once been taken by purchasing what was said to be valid but was pirated.
Could not get that copy of XP Home validated and called MS & was told CD Key
was on List of pirated Keys.
