Hi all,

I have windows xp home oem which I installed not long ago, anyway now I have
bought a bare bones system which will be ariveing soon, what I want to ask
is can I just install windows xp on the new pc?, I would be using my old
hardrive and installing it in the new system. Otherwise would I have to buy
another copy?.

Thanks

Legally you are allowed one copy per machine...
so since you will only have it on one machine you won't have to buy another
copy...
you will just have to reactivate it.

When you put the drive in the machine...because of the new hardware...
you machine may not boot up

if that happens, you can boot off your CD and perform a "repair"
installation

Remove the XP from the old system and put XP on the new system.
Install Linux on the older system, it will run like a top. Microsoft
wants it that way.

Thanks

You have an OEM version. Supposedly it is tied to the first machine it is
installed on. Don't know if it will allow you to install on a different
machine. That is why OEM versions are about 50% cheaper than the full retail
versions.

OEM wholesale is $34 while retail box wholesale is $47... But MS gives
the XP Home bundled with Office2003 to Thai government laptop program
for $30, to try to compete with the superior GNU/Linux bundle with Open
Office... Same in China, and more and more third world countries...

There is no 'support' for MS products there, anyway, like there is for
GNU/Linux! Over 525 Linux Users Groups, so you have help on the
internet, 24/7/365! http://lugww.counter.li.org

Damn and I thought Linux was so great it never needed support. FWIW WinXP works
excellent for me on the six machines I use it on and quality software is
plentiful. I don't have to use just what's available. When there is an abundance
of video, image, music, editing programs for Linux and they all install seamlessly
with the hardware then I might take a look. Until then it's strictly for geeks and
I've got a life so I don't have time to be too geeky.

So you've never even tried it and know it not for you? Guess you like
chasing viruses and worms/security holes..

I've never ridden a BMW motorcycle either but I know it's not for me. Simple
fact WinXP works great. Another simple fact the problems you are talking about
have never affected me. I've read enough about the different variations of
Linux to know I don't need or want it. So Bill Gates is a rich man because of
his operating system, fine by me, he'll get a little more money from me before
long.

Linux, aren't they giving it away, I guess they know what it's worth.

All went ok!, I did a repair and had to activate again, explained I changed
my mobo and all was well.

Thanks.
