I have Windows XP Home Edition (update version) installed
in NFTS on an PC. I am about to scrap the PC and want to
move XP to my laptop. Since I wish to avoid licensing
problems, I clearly must remove XP from the PC first, but
cam find no way of doing this. Any ideas, please?

I should have added that it is a retail copy, not OEM.

Greetings --

The normal way to "uninstall" _any_ operating system is to format
the hard drive and either leave the hard drive blank or install a new
OS of your choice.

However, if you performed an upgrade from Win98/Me, elected to
backup the old system files, and didn't convert the partition to NTFS,
then all you need do is boot into Safe Mode and Start > Control Panel
Add/Remove Programs. All of these conditions _must_ be met for the
uninstall option to be available.

Additionally, before you can legitimately used an Upgrade (I'm
guessing that this is what you mean by "update version") license on
your new PC, you'll have to have a license for an earlier, qualifying
OS installed upon, or at least permanently assigned to, the new
computer.

To remove the operating system, just format the harddrive.

The question is, what do you plan on doing with the PC? If your
intention is just to scrap it, you can download a utility from the HD
manufacturer (Maxtor, Western Digital, etc.) that will write zeros all
over the drive making it difficult for someone else to read it.

If you plan to get another desktop computer you might consider removing
the HD after wiping it and keeping it. You could use it as extra
storage by mounting it into your new desktop or, better yet, you can
buy a harddrive enclosure that will make it a portable USB drive, VERY
handy for backups or moving files from desktop to laptop or to a
computer at work. Here's an example:

Did XP come with your computer? If so, it's presumably an OEM
version, and the licensing rules for OEM versions don't permit
you to do this. Its license ties it permanently to the first
computer it's installed on. It can never legally be moved to
another computer, separately sold, or given away.

On the other hand, if yours is a retail copy, all you need to do
to remove it is to fdisk with a Windows 9X diskette, then remove
the NTFS partition.

Since the drive is NTFS, just formatting it isn't so easy. That's
why I said to use a Windows 9x diskette and use fdisk to remove
the partition.
