Hi,

I would like to move my personal.pst and archive.pst files from my C:
drive (running out of room) to my D: drive (lots of room.)

My personal.pst is 635MB and archive.pst is 200MB.

What is the best way to do this?

Copy from C: to D:, change path within OL, then delete files in C:?

I want to make sure that I don't break any links e.g. rules, or
anything else, etc.

Thanks.

Move the files, change the paths in the Mail applet of the Control Panel
then fix your rules since they will break

i can probably export and re-import the rules once the move has been
made to avoid fixing the rules manually?

Exporting them prior to the move and importing them after may be a better
alternative. I don't know, however, if it will allow the avoidance of
fixing them. I haven't tried it. I would think so.

In Outlook 2002 and 2003, rules will move with the PST but will have to be
reset so they will work with the new location. In Outlook 2007, you have to
go back to exporting and importing rules via RWZ since they seem not to
migrate with the PST (at least they haven't for me).

hi,

i'm not sure what u mean by "reset".
what do u mean exactly?
if i export and import, will that not suffice then?

*also* and very important, do i *move* or *copy* the pst files from 1
disk to the other?

tx a lot 4 ur help.

He means to click one of the variables in the rule, like the destination
folder name, if the rule moves a message to a folder, and reselect that
folder so that all of the rule information is rewritten. It will look the
same to you, but Outlook will see additional data reflecting the current
location of the PST.

It should.

If you want Outlook to look in a different place for the default PST, the
easiest is, as Vince already said, to move the file. Outlook will complain
and allow you to browse to the new location. Archive PSTs, however, are
different. If they're open in Outlook (i.e., appear in the Folder List),
they may behave the same way; i.e., Outlook will complain and allow you to
browse to their new location - I don't know for sure because I haven't
tested it. However, if they're not open, they WILL behave differently. If
you remove an archive PST from its current location (deleteing or renaming
it), then Outlook will silently recreate it in the same place the next time
autoarchive runs. For archive file moves, it's best just to update the
location using File>Archive. Each folder can also have its own archive PST
as well, do you might want to check the AutoArchive tab on the folders'
properties pages.

As far as I know when you move a PST File the rules don't break. They break
when the Folder in the file moves.
I happen to do that quite often for our users and never had a problem with
this.
