I just got a new PC running XP Pro with Outlook 2002. I
ran the backup program on my old PC which is also running
Outlook 2002 then copied the .pst file to a CD and
attempted to run the Import Export Utility to bring the
file to the new computer. I get a message that I do not
have permission to open the file. The file on the old PC
is not "read only" when I check the properties. It does
come over as "read only" on the CD but I expect that
should occur.

How can I move the file to my new computer?

You cannot access it if it's on a CD, due to the read-only attribute of the file.

Transfer it to the new HDD, then remove the read-only attribute. You can then import its contents into the new installation.

Thanks. That worked great all the folders came accross
perfectly, but only my contacts came accross not my
entire address book. On the old the Outlook address book
has numerous folders in it one of which is "contacts."
The other folders did not come accross. How do I get
them?

OOPS! Let me clarify my last question. When I look on
the left side of the Outlook screen under contacts, all
of my sub groups are actually there. But when I click on
the address book icon on top of the screen only
the "contacts" group drops down, not the sub groups.
That is what I am trying to fix. Did i really confuse
the issue?

Instead of Import, in OL File/Open/Personal Folders.......browse to location
of pst.
(File/Open etc is as is in OL2K I'm assuming 2002 is similar/same)
I believe I read a post stating that sub groups of contacts arent imported.

I'm not really certain about how you did the import. You may have only selected the Contacts folder to import or you may have imported all folders into the active Contacts folder. If the latter is the case, delete the misplaced folders and try the import wizard again.

In order to import all folders of the pst file, select the top folder (usually called Personal Folders) and be sure to check the option to include all subfolders. Be sure that the target is pointed to the top folder of the active pst file.

Right click on each of the subfolders, select Properties, then the
Outlook Address Book tab, and make sure the "Show this folder as an
e-mail address book" box is checked. Then your subfolders should show
up in the dropdown box in the Address Book.
