Hi all,
I bought a new computer, but I want to move the contents of my old computer
to my new larger hard drive in my new system. With the same probrams and
all. Is there a way to do this??

Thanks, Kelsey

Simplicity itself if using XP. : Connect up both PCs using a patch lead
between NICs.(Ethernet ports.) Then use the FASTWIZ (Files and Settings
Transfer Wizard.)
Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>FASTWIZ.

Much easier and a lot faster to put the old drive in the new computer and
then copy them across to the new drive. He didn't mention wanting all the
settings and it's best to start fresh.

You most probably don't have a couple of NIC's and a crossover cable.

The easiest way would be to take the old HDD out and out it in your new
machine temporarily. Disconnect the CD-ROM drive and replace it with the
old HDD.

Then copy the files across, or move them if you want to keep the original
file dates.

Post back if you want any further details.

Will I be able to make it boot up and run the programs the same as the old,
even if in an entire new system?

Kelsey

Not that I know of - dont forget that when you install programs they
are entered in the registry and other system files and so if you copy a
folder from one drive to another it isnt the same as installing it.
You want to put the old drive on the second ide cable of the new pc
- install the old programs with the original discs/ install files then
copy over any user files (documents, saved stuff etc) to the new hdd.
Having said that , there are old programs that didnt need stuff in the
registry to run.
So if all your stuff was really old like from the days of DOS then you could
probably
copy it over and just create a desktop shortcut to the main exe.

There's no easy way to do it. Mgrating programs is a complicated
case-by-case operation that may result in overwriting files and
mucking up your new PC. Install the programs again on the new PC,
then only copy over the configuration file(s) and/or registry settings
specific to the configuration. It's still not quick or easy. Then
copy over the data files. As another poster mentioned, the easiest
way is to have a network interface in both systems, copying over the
LAN. Otherwise you could plug the old hard drive into the new system,
but this won't give you access to the registry from the old system,
which is something you'd need.

Your old computer more than likely has an old version of Windows, and you
really should start fresh. You can copy the old files over to the new hard
drive (like stated in other parts of this thread to slave the hard drive, or
network the PC's), but you really should re-install the applications
(programs) that you need back on so that they function correctly.

If you really do want everything from your old computer, including the
probrams--
(programs or problems?)--you'll get them both, see:

http://www.xxcopy.com/clone

This free program has limitations if you're running WinXP, but so do most of
the solutions advised by others.

If you want to keep some of the stuff on the new computer, it's best to
re-install the programs now in the old computer. xxcopy will copy your
data files just fime. In this case you can install your old drive as
slave in the new computer, and copy any data from it. Programs will not copy
correctly, since their registry entries will not be copied.
