I've moved a couple of old Win95 / Win98 hard drives from
old PCs to my current WinXP Pro box. I've set them as
slaves and hoped I would be able to read from them.
However WinXP automatically tries to 'repair' them and in
the process wrecks the FAT.
I have been able to recover files using a data recovery
tool but some of them are obviously fragmented around the
disk and I only get bits of them back, along with garbage.
(1) What has WinXP actually done to my disk?
(2) How do I go about recovering my files?
(3) If I end up giving it to a data recovery company, how
do they go about recovering such files?
Any help appreciated
