I am using PowerPoint in XP Home. When I try to move an object (textbox) it
only moves in specific steps which are too big for my needs. Searching
help, I discovered that I can (in View Rulers and Grips) unselect the snap
to grid box. Yet despite doing this I cannot move the text box without its
snapping in specific steps.

Can I change this behavior and have PP let me move the object freely?

Thanks.

Holding the Alt key down while dragging the shape where it is needed
can provide some finer tuning to shape placement. You may need to have
the snap to grid box unselected also. With those two sleight of hand
tricks the shapes should start to behave nicely.

I am a bit curious if that was the fix to the problem. Increasing the
zoom in that area also helps keep an eye on where you are going with
it. If the shape that you want to move is selected, the zoom will zero
in on that area of the slide.

Yes, that did it. Holding Alt down while dragging allowed me to move it
without its snapping to a grid - and it did it without my having to deselect
the snap to grid.

Wish there was a way to add it to the help file so I re3member it next time
I need it <grin>

To prevent "snapping" you need to turn off "snap ti grid" as you did but also
"snap to other objects" otherwise the text box will try to align to nearby
objects. Dragging with alt pressed always turns off both features
temporarily. Another useful trick is to use the arrow keys with ctrl down
which nudges one pixel.
