Hi,
I'm going to send my laptop to HP for repair. So I thought I should remove
all my documents and other data before that. I did a Ctrl-X on all the
folders under User (such as Documents, Pictures, etc) and a Ctrl-V on my
portable harddrive. I suppose that was a mistake for now, Vista always looks
for that drive. How do I undo my stupid mistake? Thanks.

Try the following:
1. Right-click on the "Documents" folder and select "Properties" menu item.
2. Select the "Location" tab.
3. If it mentions the portable drive as the location, select "Move..."
button to move the folder to your local machine.
4. Repeat the above steps for other folders like "Pictures", etc.

Ctrl + C is the copy; Ctrl + V is Paste; NOT X
Use above to send to External, or:
Whatever you want to send to External Drive; select it>right-click it> Send
To> to External

He said he wanted to remove them from the drive before sending it in, so
Ctrl+X is what he wanted to use, for Cut.
