Moving Infrastructure Master, Consequences?

Hello,

I have had my Infrastructure Master running with a GC for about a year now,
and have learned the error of my ways. The only thing is, I would prefer to
just set up a Domain Controller and move the IM role there, but I'm
concerned about what the potential consequences might be if there are any AD
phantoms backlogged because of how it is set now.

Can anyone provide an indication of if it is safe to correct the issue of GC
and IM on the same domain controller?

Thanks

Hi there, IM and GC at same server should not result in any problem. But if
we look from a performance perspective this may make since.

If you have a large enterprise and have to split FSMO roles for performance
reasons deploy RID and Infrastructure FMSO roles on same server and also in
same site as the Exchange Server if a such exist then I recommend to use
another GCS.

Actually there is a very specific technical reason for splitting them
and that is what the OP is referencing when he says "error of his
ways."

The IM will not function correctly (in a multi-Domain forest) unless
it is separate from, and able to access a GC.

It is only an issue in a multiple Domain forest -- by the time you add
the second domain.

The OP can just move IM now -- the Schema Master and Domain
Naming Master are kept together and must hold GC, so move the
IM.

It is normal to keep the "PDC Emulator" and "RID Master" together,
the Infrastruture master can be/not be independent of these.
