Moving images, preserving lables, keywords, how?

I am just getting started with Digital Image Libary 2006. Somewhere in
the documentation it states that labels associated with images in
Digital Image LIbrary will be saved to the images! Somehow this doesn't
seem to work for me? If I move an image from one directory to another
(outside Digital Image Library) all the added information disappears.

Questions:
1) What am I doing wrong?
2) If the information is stored in a data base that is only accessible
by Digital Image Libary (as this is what seems to be the case), what is
the recommended strategy for preserving this information (labels,
keywords) when moving data to a different computer or for
backup/restore. I can't find any "export data base" function or
similar. There is no mention of this issue in the documentation. I'd
like to know before I get started organizing thousands of images..

Thanks
Cat

Your DIL2006 database file is Pictures.pd3
and is found in the following location:

C:\Documents and Settings\<user name>\
Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\
POD\Pictures.pd3

Pictures.pd3 contains your thumbs and
metadata.

A regular backup of this file is a good idea.
To restore the database...just drop your
backup copy in the POD folder and allow
it to replace the current one.

If the .pd3 file is deleted...the library will
create a new one and the library will revert
to it's original 'out of the box' state.

John,
Thanks for your quick reply. Knowing where the information is stored
and how to back it up will be very helpful. Does this mean though that
the documentation (i.e. metadata are stored in the images, is wrong). I
actually read a couple of reviews that praised this feature as one of
the benefits of Digital Image Libarary 2006 because it makes the
information more portable?

Also, I presume that the information in the metadata data base is
dependent on the location of the images (path, user account)? How does
one deal with moving images to another computer, a different account or
simply to a different location. I tried the archive feature, but that
doesn't seem to save the labels either. I seems I must be overlooking
something as the ability to move and transfer labels seems like an
essential feature of any organizing program. Is there maybe a way to
edit this database?

Thanks much

No I wouldn't say it's wrong...
some data can be written back
to the images and some cannot...

I have no idea what you read but the
database works like I previously explained.

If you move the image files...they
must be reimported into the library.

You may see a dialog box that states:

The following folder could not be found.
C:\Documents and Settings\etc...etc...

You can Browse to restablish the link
to the folder.

No, there is no option to edit the .pd3
database.

If the program does not meet your
expectations there is a 45 day return
guarantee from Microsoft:
