I am currently using Office 2000 Professional and am
shortly to buy a new system. I use all the Office
products, particularly Outlook. I know that I will be
backing data up, but due I just import this data (Office
2000 data) into the new product, e.g. Office XP etc. and
will this be automatically converted to the new Office
Version. In the past, I have simply upgraded to the new
version, but this does not apply when buying a new system.

Can anyone advise, please.

Look at the following two articles for help with this -- one is a primer on
Outlook files, and the other gives instructions for moving to a new Outlook
2002 machine.

Note: If your new system has Office 2003 installed instead of Office XP
(Outlook 2002), the procedure should be mostly the same, with one important
difference. Outlook 2003 has a new Unicode format for .PST files, and
you'll probably want to use the new format because it can hold a lot more
data. Therefore, you should probably let Outlook create a new .PST file
when you start it for the first time (it should do this anyway) and then
open your old .PST file beside the new one and copy data to the new file.
Older format .PST files can be used with Outlook 2003, but the new Unicode
..PST files cannot be used with older systems.
