I have attempted to transfer Outlook files from an older PC running Windows
2000 to a new one running Windows XP Professional. I followed the
instructions provided by the MS web pages dealing with this.

However, when I tried to copy the .pst files into the relevant folder of
Outlook 2003 they were not recognized. The .pst files had an unusual image as
an icon and did not have an extension. When I tried to open them, the Browser
ws unable to find a suitable program.

Any suggestions on how to cure this would be welcome.

Thank you

Generally you dont copy the pst files to the default folder, as its likely
you will overwrite existing pst files.
Copy them to eg Documents folder - its not neccessary for them to be located
in the default outlook folder
I assume you copied these from your old installation with outlook closed,
and didnt use export, if either of these are true you will either have
corrupted the file, or in the case of export lost data & settings
Within your new Outlook installation, File>Open>Data File......browse to the
location and open the data file
(You cannot open an outlook data file from explorer)
