I moved my docs from an old machine (Win98) to a server
using cut-paste method. I then moved the same docs from
server to new machine(XP) using the same method. I lost
every single doc. All I got were folders and sub-folders
with nothing inside them. The entire folder tree is there,
but no docs. How is that? Help

Clearly (and I'm sorry) you did something wrong and it's hard to figure
out from the information provided exactly what happened.

I assume the "cut and paste method" means you use Explorer and "cut"
(deleted) from the old machine, then pasted (created new) to the new
machine. Too late to advise this, but this is not a good way to do
this. If anything goes wrong, there is no fall-back since the source is
"deleted" by cutting. Something did go wrong and you apparently have no
fall back.

The better way (and I know it's too late), is to use the "drag and drop"
method. Right mouse click and chose to copy from one to another. Do it
on folders.

To recover: go back to the Win 98 machine and check again that the
files are not there. Check the recycle bin to see if maybe they can be
brought back.
