Moving files & programs from ME to XP computer

OM

My ME OS computer died recently. The replacement is an e-machine with XP for
the operating system. My software is all legal, but programs such as the
2004 TurboTax were updated online, and the state tax files were also
downloaded to the ME hard drive. I would like to resuscitate the 2004
updated program and state tax program with the 2004 data before doing my the
2005 taxes. (I can only imagine how difficult it will be to get Intuit to
re-load the old upgrades to a different computer.) My ME hard drive is
functional, and I installed is in my XP system as a second non-system drive.
Is there any way to get XP to recognize and use the updated TurboTax
programs on the second drive; of course, the data files are no problem.
Would the old Norton DiskDoctor program (or a new version made for XP) be
able to fix the XP registry to recognize the TTax programs on the second
drive? Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Why don't you boot with just the ME drive installed on the primary IDE
channel and create a backup of the files. Then make the XP drive the boot
drive, install the 2004 version of the tax software, and restore the backup
to it?

If you already have a backup, just install the program on the XP system and
restore the backup.

If the two programs are different (2004 and 2005 versions) you can install
both of them on the XP system. Just select a location that is different to
the default location for one of them if they both use the same default
location.

Sorry but you can't effectively transfer an installed program from one
OS installation to another except for only a few basic programs -
TurboTax not being one of them. The registry needs to be updated for
most programs and the only way to accomplish that is to install the
programs on the new XP installation from the original media.

Additionally data files can be transferred. Just install the hard drive
from the old system as a slave drive in the new and copy the data files.

There are relatively inexpensive software products available from places
like Staples that WILL effectively transfer installed programs from one
OS installation to another. I've seen them on the shelf. Check to see
that TurboTax and ME are on the supported list.
