Moving Favorites Location?

Hi there,

Is it at all possible to change the location of where Internet Explorer
stores its favorites? I'm constantly on the move between two computers, so if
it could be set to store these onto my USB drive (H:), rather than C:, this
would be a huge time-saver.

Failing this, would any other browser offer this feature?

Thanks.

Hi GeoSmith :-)

Try the following information and see if it helps

Suggested three methods you can use:

#1. Find the folder where the old Favorites are located
View>Select All>Right click>select Copy
Paste them into the new folder
They should not appear in the Favorites when you open IE

#2. First make a backup copy of the old Favorites folder, then copy all the
contents of the old Folder to the new one. Then close the new Folder,
highlight it, don't open it, then Right-drag this folder to the location you
want to use it instead, i.e., your C:\Documents and Settings\Satoshi\My
Documents" folder and then choose Move here from the menu that pops up when
you drop the folder. IF it asks if you want to replace the old Folder say
yes. If it won't let you replace the folder, then delete the old folder and
do the Right drag process again and this time it sould let you move it. IE
will then automatically reset all the references to that new location, and
all the Favorites should appear in your Favorites menu in IE.

#3. If the above methods do not work, then you may have to make manual
changes in the Registry to change the default location of the Favorites by
making an adjustment in the Register using the methods below. However, make
sure you back it up the Registry before you make any changes.

You need to make a new value Favorites with the path to your newly made
folder in
HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User
Shell Folders

(Note from Jan here: in your case, you will enter the path to your old
Favorites folder instead of the newly made folder.)

On reboot Windows will change the path in
HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell
Folders as well.

You need to edit the registry. See "Description of the Microsoft Windows
registry" article:

If you don't prefer editing the registry, use this utility and reset the
Favorites path to defaults.
