I currently have a domain controller running Windows 2000
and Active Directory. The server is also the DNS
Server. The DC has to be taken offline for about a month
and i want to move DNS service to another additional DC
within active directory. I have already tried this but
when the DHCP server allocates IP address's etc it does
not seem to recognise the new DNS server, and thus it
still thinks the DNS is running on the DC (even though i
physically turn off the DC). Am i doing something
obviously wrong??

Cheers

Simon,

Have you configured the DHCP Options to reflect that
there is either a second DNS Server ( so clients will
have two DNS Server IP Addresses instead of just the
one ) or changed the IP Address of the DNS Server to
reflect the new DNS Server IP Address ( and, thus,
removed the old DNS Server's IP Address )? The later
would be the better option.

Also, please be careful with keeping a DC off-line for
that long of a time. Be aware that if that DC is off-
line for 60 days or more you will have a whole bunch of
problems. This is, in part, due to the Tombstone life of
60 days.

HTH,

Cary
